Your WordPress site needs to be online, reachable over HTTPS, and accessible to you. Update WordPress, themes and plugins before using the migration tool.
Add your domain to the plan before you start. You can connect an existing domain without transferring its registration.
WordPress.com sites, sites built on other website builders, and local development sites need a different approach. Subdirectory installs and moves from another DreamHost account also need separate guidance.

The DreamHost Automated Migration plugin is free to use with your DreamHost hosting. A paid hosting plan is required. DreamPress also includes one professional migration per site. Professional migration on other plans is a paid service; see the available options.
Add your domain to a DreamHost hosting plan. In your panel, open the site’s settings and choose Content → Explore Migrations. Scan your site, view the available options, and select Automated. The guided steps explain how to use the plugin to copy your WordPress site. You can check migration status in the panel and will receive an email when it finishes. Read the full instructions.
After purchasing DreamPress, open the migration dashboard in your DreamHost panel and choose the included professional migration. Provide the access details requested by the team so they can move your site. You can sign in to your panel here.
The plugin copies your WordPress website. Domain registration and mailboxes are separate services. You can leave your domain registered elsewhere and point it to DreamHost. If you want to move email or transfer the domain registration too, plan those steps separately before changing your domain settings.
The plugin can move a whole network when Network Activated; it does not move individual subsites between networks. DreamHost recommends Managed VPS, Dedicated or DreamCompute for multisite. Multisite is not supported on shared hosting or DreamPress, and DreamHost Support does not provide technical assistance with multisite installs. Read the requirements before choosing a plan.
Most plugin migrations take under an hour, though larger or more complex sites can take longer. The included DreamPress professional migration typically takes one business day. Standard professional migration typically takes three business days. Ask the team about your requirements if timing is critical.
Keep your existing hosting active while the site is copied and checked. Only point your domain to DreamHost once the new site is ready. We provide guidance to help prevent or minimize interruption while DNS settings update. A store, membership site or other frequently changing site may need a coordinated maintenance window; discuss this before starting.
Yes. DreamPress customers can choose the automated plugin or the included professional migration. Use the plugin if you prefer to work through the guided process yourself.
The plugin is for WordPress. For other sites, you can move your files manually or ask Pro Services to review the transfer. Proprietary builders such as Wix, Weebly and Squarespace, and Windows ASP websites, may require a different approach and additional work or fees. Confirm the scope with the team first.
