What is Drop Catching?
Drop catching is when a person registers a domain name that has expired. The “drop” is the exact moment a domain is back on the market for registration. Then, interested parties can quickly “catch” it.
More About Drop Catching
Drop catching involves monitoring expired domains and using automated systems to immediately register them as soon as they drop. Sometimes the catching process occurs less than a second after a domain is removed from the registry.
After a domain expires, the owner is given a Redemption Grace Period (RGP) to re-register the domain. When the grace period ends without renewal, the expired domain is listed at auction for the highest bidder. Then, if the domain is not purchased at auction, the registrar deletes (or “drops”) the domain, and drop catching services can register them.
