What is a Security Key?
A security key is a password that allows authorization to a wireless network. This protects the network from unwanted access and establishes a secure connection.
More About Security Keys
The most common example of a network security key is a Wi-Fi password. In this scenario, a user must enter a password before they can connect their device to the network.
There are three main types of network encryption that use these security keys:
- The first is Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), which is an outdated security system that is easy to break.
- Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) is a newer protection system, but it is still vulnerable to cyberattacks.
- Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) is the most secure, since it encrypts internet data and prevents unauthorized access by using a strong security key.
In most cases, you can find your network security key by looking at your Wi-Fi router. You can also view this security key in your smartphone’s settings.
