There are two main image file types: vector and raster. While raster files are comprised of pixels, vector files are created with mathematically defined shapes. This means that vector files can be resized without losing any resolution, making them more versatile than raster files.
Since you can resize vector files and retain the image quality, they can be used for many different purposes. For example, you might save a business logo as a vector file. That way, it can be resized to fit a billboard. AI (.ai) is Adobe’s native vector file format. It is well-suited for logos, magazine images, and illustrations. EPS (.eps) is an older vector file type that doesn’t support transparency. PDF (.pdf) files can be used to exchange documents across platforms. Lastly, SVG (.svg) vector files are based in HTML, so they are useful in web design.
