What is Domain Privacy?
Domain privacy is a service offered by domain name registrars that conceals the owner’s personal information. The registrar replaces the domain owner’s contact details with forwarding service information.
More About Domain Privacy
To complete a domain registration, applicants must list their name, home address, phone number, and other contact details. Then, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires this information to be publicly listed on the WHOIS database.
This setup allows anyone to search for a domain and contact its owner to buy existing domains. Since this can also cause personal information to be exploited by hackers or spammers, domain owners often implement domain privacy.
Instead of listing personal details, domain registrars include information about a forwarding service, which is usually a proxy server. With this service, domain owners can avoid identity theft and receive fewer spam calls and emails.
