A domain registry is a database that contains all of the information about domain names and their registrants. It handles data for Top-Level Domains (TLDs), as well as subdomains.

Domain registries are mainly responsible for handling the administrative data for Top-Level Domains (TLDs). They keep a database of domain names and who they are assigned to.
A domain registry can also set rules for particular domains and create new domain extensions. A registry works directly with domain registrars to sell domains to individuals and companies.
For example, a registrar can only sell a “.com” or “.net” domain to an individual. It also has to notify Verisign, the leading domain name registration provider. After paying Verisign a small fee, a registrar can allow a user to purchase that domain.
